I read a News story recently at NewsRemote.com that made me stop and take a pause to wonder about our laws of justice and today’s society in general. The story was about a shooting that took place recently during a robbery attempt at a Pharmacy in Oklahoma. At first glance it seems like just another brief headline of a tragic death that is seemingly typical and sad occurrence which takes place almost daily at the hands or our youth. Often the crimes committed are done so by those that are driven by the desperate drug or alcohol induced individuals that run the streets like a pack of wild dogs in our urban cities across our Nation Coast to Coast. Sadly this is a reprehensible statement upon our society which seems to be gaining traction at time when our economy has faltered and our citizens are weakened by the stress of loss of jobs, income and even their homes. That may explain why a Oklahoma Pharmacist, 57 year Jerome Ersland is being regarded as somewhat of a folk hero along the same light as Clint Eastwood in the Movie Dirty Harry. If you don’t recall the movie or Clint Eastwood I’m sure you’re familiar with one of the most famous lines in movie making history. “Go ahead punk, make my day.” In fact, Oklahoma is one of the states that passed the Make My Day Law whereby citizens have the right to defend their homes and families from intruders. That law was later adapted to include Business’s. It is that law which ultimately may give a pass to the Pharmacist who is currently facing first degree murder charges of a 16 year old male. A would be thief who along with an accomplice entered the store in an attempt to rob the Pharmacy and attempt to murder in the process. It is my understanding in reading several other articles in this regard that the teen took a shot at Jerom Ersland and missed. The Pharmacist then pulled his own gun and shot the youth in his head. His accomplice ran out the door with the Pharmacist in hot pursuit. Unsuccessful in halting the fleeing would be thief Mr.Ersland returned to the store, the security cameras showed that he walked past the unconscious youth and pulled another gun from behind the counter and shot this kid 5 more times fatally wounding him in the abdomen. The Prosecutors argue that this act is first degree murder and takes on a vigilante who sought his own justice. What do you think? Did the Pharmacist create murder or was it self defense of his business, employees and himself? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

One thing is certain each year there will be an influenza outbreak, a.k.a. “The Flu.” It’s nothing to sneeze at. Over the years, this dreaded virus which kills approximately 30,000 people nationally has had some type of fancy name attached it to it. Growing up as a young adult I recall it as the Hong Kong Flu. Over the years, there’ s been The Asian Flu, The Spanish Flu, and in 2004 out of Southeast Asia came the Avian Influenza or H5N1. This was also known as the Bird flu because it killed over 100 million birds within the year as it was then transferred into the human population. Do you recall the fears of eating poultry or eggs?
In addition to humans and birds getting and transferring the flu virus, did you know that pigs, tigers, leopards, ferrets, and domestic cats can be infected with the influenza in its many strains? I don’t know about you, but if I’m going to get sick from the flu, I want it to be something manly like the, Tiger Flu, or the Leopard Flu. Can you imagine calling in to work and saying, “hey boss, sorry I need to stay home today because I got a bad case of the ferret flu. Yeah, feeling a bit weasely, kinda of sore and sneezely.” Or, how about the feline flu? That’s where your office buddies tell your colleagues that you needed to stay home because you got the wussy flu. Just the name makes it sound like you’re a big wus to stay home. Instead this year we have The Swine Flu. That name in itself sounds filthy and disgusting. I certainly don’t want any of my colleagues coming to work spreading those germs around me. The ferrate flu, I don’t mind. The Tiger flu…I’d be proud to catch that one. But, the Swine Flu? To make it worse is that the media has taken this flu to an all time high, or in my humble estimation a new low. Is it really necessary to talk about it, in every newscast every day, Day and night? I think it’s the media causing the pandemic rather than the virus. Is it really necessary to shut down schools? Next, we’ll be shipping off all the sick people south of the boarder where this virus originated from. Want to stop this pandemic? Wash your hands, when you sneeze do so into your sleeve and make sure you keep your environment clean.

It is said that you know you’re in a Recession when your neighbor gets laid-off and in a Depression when you get laid-off. If you’re one of the millions who has been laid-off recently, I don’t need to tell you how desperate, and stressed-out you must be feeling right about now. You know it and I know it. I’ve been there. Remember the Internet Bubble of 2000 and 2001? I was a victim of it, I lived it. The difference was that at that time it was relegated to a single industry. This time around virtually every sector and industry of our economy has been negatively impacted. Key among them is Financial Institutions, Automotive and Housing. Hundreds of thousands of jobs have been lost and Homes foreclosed upon by the thousands. Seems like every decade we have been in has had some sort of a recession at some point in time. Are you old enough to remember the long Gas lines of the late ‘70’s when Gas was rationed and you could only purchase Gas on certain days of the week? How about the high interest rates of the early ‘80’s? I remember purchasing my first Town Home when rates were as high as 18%! Do you remember that in the early ‘90’s that hundreds of Auto Dealers had their doors shuttered overnight because people couldn’t afford or where unable to buy a car? Let’s us also never forget the day in American infamy 9/11/01 and the financial disaster brought upon our country at that time. Through it all and each time we’ve rebounded like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, and so too shall we rise. Personally speaking, I think the flames of our burning economy are showing signs of flaming out. No doubt that the hot embers of this debacle will exist for awhile yet to come, but keep the faith and soon they too will disappear.
Here are a few reasons for my optimism. I read recently that Housing starts for January ‘09 has climbed +22%. A friend of a friend who works in the steel industry recently expressed that their selling more steel to the Auto manufactures. Citigroup, JP Morgan/Chase and Bank of America all reported first quarter profits. These are all good signs and do offer a glimmer of hope. Still we won’t be in a full recovery mode until people start getting hired into new jobs and Banks stop hoarding the cash it has received from our governments stimulus package and start releasing it to those who can afford to buy a home or a new car but can’t get credit because their FICA scores aren’t in the mid-700 range. I believe that for the most part that pretty much Main Street USA, America – where Joe the Plumber, Tony the Electrician or Grace the Mortgage Estimator live. Until they get back on their feet we all will continue to feel the fatigue and sleepless nights that go into worrying about what each day will bring forth to us. Fear not my friend as this too shall come to pass. Let’s do however keep our glimmer of hope alive.
God Bless.
